Dental Waterline Biofilm Resource Center

What is Biofilm

Biofilm is the dangerous buildup of microorganisms and their waste products, which build up and stick to surfaces. It is a complex community of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that adhere to surfaces and secrete a protective matrix that makes them resistant to removal and disinfection.

Biofilm in Dental Waterlines

Dental waterlines are the perfect environment for the growth of these microorganisms, especially when the water sits stagnant overnight, on weekends, or holidays. The narrow tubing, low flow rates, and warm temperatures create ideal conditions for biofilm formation. Once established, biofilm can continuously contaminate the water flowing through dental units, posing a risk to both patients and dental staff.

Dangers of Biofilm

Microorganisms which are not eliminated can cause serious infection under the right conditions. Biofilm in dental waterlines can harbor pathogenic bacteria that may lead to infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients or during surgical procedures. The protective matrix of biofilm makes it extremely difficult to remove, allowing harmful microorganisms to persist and multiply within the waterline system.

Recent Outbreaks

The American Dental Association have been advocating for states to strengthen regulations. Only CA, WA and GA recently implemented new dental waterline regulations, but this trend seems likely to continue across country in the coming years. LineTab helps practices stay compliant with these infection control regulations. Regulations or not, your patients deserve the safety that LineTab provides.

Outline of California

Orange County, California (2016)

71 children were infected with Mycobacterium abcessus, causing permanent tooth loss and jaw bone removal.

Atlanta, Georgia (2015)

23 children age 4-8 were infected with Mycobacterium abscessus after pulpotomies. Some required surgical excision.

Maintenance Protocols

Proper maintenance of dental waterlines is essential to prevent biofilm formation and ensure patient safety. Regular treatment with appropriate disinfectants, following manufacturer guidelines, and maintaining proper water quality standards are critical components of an effective waterline maintenance protocol. LineTab provides an easy-to-use solution that helps dental practices maintain clean, safe waterlines.
